The Context

The challenges of urbanisation and climate change are being experienced all over the world. Africa is the youngest, and most rapidly urbanising continent in the world. By 2100, it’s expected that the continent could be home to nearly 1/2 of the world’s young population, most of whom will live in cities.

Wearthly.Studio, LUDI and AIR are passionate about creating more inclusive, liveable, and sustainable cities. In order to achieve this, we believe that it’s important to increase the participation of young people in the development of their communities (Since 2010, AIR has worked with Podium voor Architecture ( PvA) to broaden the reach of their proven Design-Thinking program; ‘Learning in the Metropo(o)lder’ (LIDM), which facilitates the active participation of young people in spatial design practice. Supported by funding from the Creative Industries Fund, Netherlands; AIR, Wearthly.Studio and The Lagos Urban Development Initiative (LUDI) aim to expand the existing LIDM agenda into Lagos. The Inherited City Urban Lab (TICUL) is thus born as an opportunity to contextualise AIR’s existing design-thinking methodology and create a youth program that is relevant to the challenges and systems in Lagos, Nigeria and on the continent. This collaboration will facilitate the civil inclusion of young people within the equitable and inclusive development of Africa’s largest and youngest city.
All team members from AIR, Wearthly. Studio and LUDI are firm in the belief that the West has a lot to learn from cultural approaches in Africa and vice versa. This collaboration will foster knowledge sharing and cultural exchange across continents, from one Water City to another. Furthermore, by partnering with young people, local urban actors, and think tanks to develop an urban lab in Lagos, Nigeria, the team can spotlight some of the innovative and creative thinking occurring by young minds in Africa.

What is TICUL?

The Inherited City Urban Lab (TICUL) is a design workshop that encourages young people to become aware and enthusiastic about the environment in which they live. The result is ambitious, young people, more aware and enthusiastic about the environment in which they live, and able to approach real-world spatial issues tangibly.
Lagos can be a challenging city for a lot of reasons. We may struggle with energy shortages, poor connection, access to mobility, pollution or even insecurity. How can we tackle these challenges to create a better future for ourselves?
Over 5 days TICUL invites young people between the ages of 12 and 17 to work with professionals to solve a spatial problem in their neighborhood
