The Kuip Research and Recreational Landscape

2022 . Netherlands

The Challenge

W.S is deeply interested in understanding how human activities impact environmental ecologies and the need to enhance societal appreciation for natural capital’s true value. Thus, this project examines the Netherlands’ move towards a bio-based economy. This transition recognizes the genuine cost of natural capital and emphasizes nature’s ability to provide sustainable energy, food, and water. The proposal outlines a three-step transition, shifting from traditional biofuels to advanced biofuels from micro-algae, encouraging public engagement, and establishing an emblematic structure in Rotterdam to showcase the city’s commitment to a sustainable renewable energy transition.

The research question,

‘How can Rotterdam create an emblem for the Dutch bio-economy transition that fosters transparent communication between industry, policy and the public? ’

The Impact

This adaptive reuse project in Rotterdam converts De Kuip; a renowned football stadium into a hybrid ‘Landscape for Bio-Based Research and Recreation.’ This innovative space consists of research and production facilities, an exhibition space, workshop spaces and a natural swimming pool amongst other things. It aims to foster transparent communication between stakeholders, particularly putting the public at the forefront of the Dutch energy transition.
