This workshop was established in 1996 and has transformed into a yearly community event with a focus on social and cultural sustainability within Koshirakura’s post-agricultural community.
Using only locally available materials, we transformed an old shed beside the local primary school into an Asumaya; a traditional Japanese Summer Pavilion typically in formal Japanese gardens. Ours incorporated an area for sleeping, a kitchenette and servery with the concept that the whole pavilion could open up completely during the summer months and close down protectively during the high snowfall, winter season.
